Taking the Course - Instructions

The process is simple. Just follow these steps in order. Guillermo will keep you posted on your progress.

Step 1: Register
This is for new customers only. If you have used our service previously, use the Login option. After you have successfully registered, we will email you a confirmation.

Step 2: Study Segment
To receive an eFoodhandlers Food Safety Certificate for Illinois, you must perform study prior to taking the exam. There are 2 study options. Choose ONE:

  • Study Option 1. Self-paced Study Guide (mobile ready)
This option is most aligned to the requirements of the basic food handler. The text-based study guide is suitable for language translation and ADA assistance. It combines both quizzes and videos from the eFoodhandlers video library. It is a 40 page document that generally takes 90 minutes to complete.

  • Study Option 2. eLearning Course
The eLearning Course is a multi-media learning experience that combines spoken text, video and interactive learning exercises to provide a comprehensive and enjoyable learning experience. It takes approximately 60-90 minutes to complete.

Step 3:Take the Test
The Test is designed to assess your understanding of essential food safety concepts. It consists of 40 questions. A passing score is 75% (30 of our 40) correct. If you do not pass the test, you can review the study materials and then re-take the test as many times as required. If you do not pass the test after 3 tries, you will be required to re-take the study segment. A practice test is also available.

Step 4: Pay the Course Fee
The Fee for the Basic Food Handler's Course is $10. Payment of the fee entitles you to print an official eFoodhandlers Certificate, Wallet Card and Picture Badge. We will also retain your transcripts on-line for the duration of your certificate term (currently 3 years). All payment must be by credit card. eFoodhandlers has a Satisfaction Guarantee Policy and will issued a refund with no questions asked. Anyone who is unable to pay their fee may request a fee waiver through the support desk.

Step 5: Print your Certificate, Card & Picture Badge
After you have passed the exam and paid the fee, you will have access to the print Certificates, Wallet Cards, and Picture Badges. This option uses a pop-up window. If a window does not appear, you probably have a pop-up blocker that you must disable. If you need your printed materials mailed, you can request additional services during the Payment process.

In Illinois, your certificate is valid for 3 years. Use the Verify Credentials link located under the Other Options tab to validate the credentials of food handlers who obtained an eFoodhandlers certificate.
